Lab 5: I spent 31 weeks of game time testing meat in Foundation, and then I counted every single piece of it, you don't have to.So here's what I set out to answer:
How much meat do 150 people actually eat in a week?
What happens to your town when one of the two refined foods runs out?
Who is doing all the eating, the commoners or the serfs?
How far will a market tender walk, and how many hunters does one butchery really need?
So here's the setup. Everything ran at three times speed on the recent game version, with the Harvest Festival DLC switched off. 150 people, no one added to the town. 23 of them are commoners and the rest are serfs. Four bread stalls and four meat stalls near homes, with fish and berries still on offer. I banked the food first, then paused the bakeries and butchers so everything eaten came out of stock. No stall ran dry and nothing was traded during a run. Bread and meat only, because the cheese chain isn't built yet. Here's where I landed:
Over four weeks they ate 208 meat. That's about 0.35 each a week, or one meat every 20 days. Alongside it, 249 bread, about 0.42 each, or one loaf every 17 days.
Take one away and they lean on the other. With the meat gone, bread went up 53%, a loaf every 11 days instead of 17. With the bread gone, meat went up 79%, about one every 11 days instead of 20.
Commoners decide the total. At 40 commoners the meat line levelled off at 229, and two extra meat stalls took it to 275 while bread dropped to 216. Total refined food barely moved. The town just swapped some bread for meat.
Busted: that a meat stall sits empty because it's too far away. My tender walked 160 metres happily, and 420 metres in the ladder town.
Busted: that butchers won't fetch boar from a hunter's hut that's far off. They walked 85 metres past a nearer hut, because the biggest pile wins.
Confirmed: an idle, empty producer near a stall stops that stall's tender restocking, even with a full granary well within reach. Move it, or demolish it.
One butchery needs about 1.6 hunter's huts. You can't build six tenths of a hut, so round up to two.
This is episode 5 of Nanna's Lab, where I put the Foundation community's questions, issues and tips to the test with actual numbers — Foundation game tips built from my own testing, not guesswork.

23:54 What's next in the lab🏆 The takeaway — Count your serfs and commoners on the taxation tab. A serf eats about two and a half refined foods a month, a commoner about six. Add those up, split the total half and half between meat and bread, then add a fifth more for safety — or just take 60% of the total as your meat figure and 60% as your bread figure. Turn that into buildings and always round up, because a butchery makes about 180 meat a month, a hunter's hut brings in enough boar for about 110, and a bakery makes about 300 bread as long as the flour never stops. One meat stall and one bread stall for every 40 villagers or so, the same number of each, so the town eats half and half. And keep a month's worth of each back before you trade anything away. Every time you promote someone, run it again, because a commoner eats more than twice what a serf does.📚

If you kept your bread within about 190 metres of a granary after Lab 3, you've done no harm at all. I just had the reason wrong — it wasn't the distance, it was a bakery sitting idle nearby.
So have you ever had a stall sit empty right beside a full granary, or watched a tender get trapped and never restock? Tell me about it in the comments. The best ideas for these experiments come from the community, and I read every one.Thank you so much for watching.
If this made boar and meat less of a struggle, please like the video and subscribe so you can catch the food lines test. See you in the lab.
