Almost 2,000 years ago, somebody in Pompeii put 81 loaves of bread in the oven, and never came back for them. Everyone knows the story of the city frozen in time. But the closer you look, the stranger it gets: the Romans didn't know their mountain was a volcano, most people probably got away, and we still aren't sure what month it happened.
Our time traveler visits Pompeii in AD 79: street food counters, rude graffiti, election posters "signed" by the late-night drinkers, a dog mosaic, a town still repairing earthquake damage, and a green mountain covered in vineyards. Then the mountain explodes. We follow Pliny the Younger's eyewitness letter, his uncle's rescue mission, the rediscovery of the town, the plaster casts and the 2024 DNA study that rewrote their stories.

WHAT'S DOCUMENTED, WHAT'S DEBATED
Pliny the Younger's letters (6.16 and 6.20) are our only eyewitness account. Pompeii's population is an estimate (somewhere between about 10,000 and 20,000). About 1,300 victims have been found; the view that most people escaped is the leading one, not a proven count. The date is debated: the best-known copies of Pliny's letter say 24 August; a charcoal note found in 2018 reads 17 October, but a 2023-24 test showed such a note can survive for months. Victims are never shown dying in this video; the casts appear only as museum objects.
