Gunsan Miryong Reservoir, South Korea

The Miryong Reservoir, located in Gunsan, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea, is a historic flatland irrigation reservoir that has supported agricultural production for over four centuries. Situated between the Geum River and Mangyeong River basins, the reservoir was designed to capture seasonal rainfall and surface runoff for gravity-fed irrigation of fertile rice-growing plains. Unlike conventional valley reservoirs, it employs a broad, shallow storage system with an earth-fill embankment, intake conduit, and controlled water distribution network. The present reservoir, reconstructed and expanded in 1959, has a gross storage capacity of approximately 3.95 million m³ and irrigates around 1,000 hectares of farmland. Managed by the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC), it incorporates modern monitoring systems and supplemental water supply from the Geum River to ensure reliable irrigation and drought resilience.
