My River Spey canoe adventure begins at Kingussie, with a loaded Bergans Ally, a journey towards the sea ahead of me, and the first night’s camp still to find. The full journey covers 123 km, taking me three days plus a final hour and a half on the fourth morning. This film follows the first stage. After assembling the canoe, I ease into the trip with a few small rapids before the river opens out towards Loch Insh. A beautiful sky, glassy water and the Cairngorms backdrop make for a memorable start to the journey. Beyond Kincraig Bridge, the river begins to demand a little more attention. Light rain, livelier rapids, shallow rocks and plenty of fallen trees keep me busy choosing a way through. One awkward stretch has me jumping out to stop the canoe running into the trees—an opportunity to get my feet wet rather sooner than planned! After around 37 km, I find a spot to camp near Boat of Garten and settle in for my first evening beside the Spey. This is Part 1 of my River Spey journey, and the beginning of the films from my month in Scotland. There’s more to come from the Spey, the Caledonian Canal, the River Tay and several packraft adventures. Thanks for joining me. If you enjoy unhurried outdoor adventures, canoe journeys and nights under canvas—or hanging between trees—you’re welcome to subscribe and follow along. See you on whatever the next adventure is.
