A fake job scam can become convincing for one simple reason: sometimes the scammer pays you first. The FTC says task scammers may send a small payment — often $5 to $20 — to build trust before asking you to deposit your own money. The FBI describes a similar pattern in cryptocurrency job scams: early withdrawals may work, then required deposits grow until the account is frozen and more money is demanded. This episode shows how that task-scam pattern works, then compares it with a separate fake-recruiter/fake-check job scam so the two mechanisms are not confused.
