In this video, I’m back to experimenting with an ancient Egyptian-style granite drilling setup, and this one did not go according to plan. I started by trying to improve the bow system with a wooden ratchet mechanism designed to keep the ropes under tension. It worked beautifully at first, but within minutes the added stress split the wooden bows apart. A lot of you had warned me that this design was overcomplicated and that the grain direction and extra tension could become a problem. You were right! Instead of trying to force a failed idea to work, I stripped the drill back down and started again. I simplified the bows, switched to a more practical copper tube drill, and tested a much simpler crossed-rope arrangement suggested in the comments. To my surprise, it worked dramatically better. The movement was smoother, the drill produced more rotations per stroke, and the entire mechanism became easier to assemble, adjust, and repair. This project is very much an experiment in progress. Sometimes recreating (or in my case inventing) ancient technology means admitting when a clever-looking solution is actually making things worse. In this case, simplifying the design finally put me on the right path. Next step, I get some start drilling my red granite block! Thanks to everyone who has been following the series and especially those leaving thoughtful suggestions in the comments. A few of you quite literally helped fix my drill.
