Phoolan Devi's Village Sheikhpur Gudha Tour | Bandit Queen's Ancestral House & Untold Stories
Phoolan Devi's native village, Sheikhpur Gudha (also spelled Shekhpur Gurha or Shekhpur Gudda), is located in Kalpi tehsil of Jalaun district, Uttar Pradesh, India, in the Bundelkhand region near the Yamuna River. The village is historically significant as the birthplace of Phoolan Devi (10 August 1963 – 25 July 2001), popularly known as the "Bandit Queen", who was born into a poor Mallah (Nishad) family. Her early life was marked by poverty, caste-based discrimination, child marriage and disputes over ancestral agricultural land, including a conflict involving approximately four bighas of farmland and a neem tree.
These experiences became important elements in accounts of her childhood and subsequent struggles. Phoolan Devi later emerged as one of the most controversial figures in modern Indian history, gaining notoriety for her involvement in armed banditry before surrendering to the authorities in Madhya Pradesh in 1983. After spending approximately eleven years in prison, she entered electoral politics as a member of the Samajwadi Party and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mirzapur in 1996 and 1999. Her transformation from a wanted outlaw into a Member of Parliament attracted national and international attention. She was assassinated in New Delhi on 25 July 2001.
In this Travel Junoon documentary, we explore Sheikhpur Gudha, Phoolan Devi's ancestral village, examining her childhood home, family history, the ancestral land dispute, the significance of the neem tree and the geographical importance of the Yamuna River. The documentary features interactions with her family members, including her brother and daughter-in-law, alongside visits to her ancestral house, local agricultural fields, traditional village houses, an approximately 300-year-old temple and other significant locations associated with her life. Through historical accounts, local perspectives and an exploration of rural traditions, the documentary highlights the social conditions, cultural heritage and developmental challenges of Sheikhpur Gudha while tracing Phoolan Devi's extraordinary and controversial journey from a village in Bundelkhand to the Indian Parliament.
