📅 Date: July 27, 2025 After an unforgettable week exploring Oaxaca City, the Guelaguetza, and the surrounding mountain communities, it was finally time for a completely different adventure. Today we would leave the Central Valleys of Oaxaca behind and descend all the way to the Pacific Coast. On paper, the drive didn't seem particularly long. In reality, it became one of the most demanding mountain drives of our entire journey through Mexico. 🚙 Travel & Vehicle Telemetry 📅 Date: July 27, 2025 📍 Starting Point: Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca 🛣️ Route: Teotitlán del Valle → San Francisco Lachigoló → Santa Lucía del Camino → San Bartolo Coyotepec → Sierra Sur → Puerto Escondido Area → Mazunte 🏁 Destination: Mazunte, Oaxaca 🚙 Distance Driven: 262.6 km (163.2 mi) ⛽ Fuel Consumed: 19.076 L 💵 Fuel Cost: $535.46 MXN 🌮 The Barbacoa That Got Away The day started with a small regret. As we left Teotitlán, we spotted several roadside barbacoa stands. We hesitated. We kept driving. And before we knew it, the opportunity had disappeared behind us. Like many travelers, we've learned that sometimes the best meals happen when you stop immediately instead of saying: 👉 "We'll find something later." Spoiler alert: we didn't. ⛰️ One of the Toughest Drives of the Trip The route toward Oaxaca's coast proved much more demanding than expected. Anyone looking only at the GPS estimate might assume it's a routine drive. It isn't. The road included: ⚠️ Endless curves ⚠️ Continuous elevation changes ⚠️ Narrow sections ⚠️ Heavy mountain driving ⚠️ Rain-damaged pavement ⚠️ Areas affected by previous landslides There were moments when the real-world travel time felt completely disconnected from what the navigation app had predicted. This was a route that demanded patience and constant attention. 🌴 Why We Chose Mazunte Instead of Puerto Escondido As we approached the coast, we faced an important decision. Many travelers automatically choose Puerto Escondido. We went in a different direction. Instead, we selected Mazunte as our base. Why? Because we were looking for: ✅ A quieter atmosphere ✅ Less traffic ✅ Fewer crowds ✅ More nature ✅ A slower pace of life Rather than nightlife and large tourist concentrations, we wanted a place where the ocean, sunsets, and natural surroundings would be the main attraction. 🏡 Our Hilltop Cabin in Mazunte By late afternoon, we reached our accommodation. Cabañas Con Adrián. Located on a hillside above town, the property immediately felt very different from anywhere we had stayed so far. We were welcomed by: 🌿 Tropical vegetation 🦎 Geckos and lizards 🦋 Butterflies 🎶 Cicadas 🌊 Ocean air 🏡 Outdoor kitchen space 😴 Hammocks and panoramic views It felt less like a hotel and more like temporarily moving into the Oaxacan coast. 🥵 First Contact With Coastal Humidity The mountains were behind us. And the coast wasted no time making its presence known. The heat and humidity were immediate. After weeks spent in higher elevations around Mexico City, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca's valleys, arriving at sea level felt like entering an entirely different climate zone. One step outside and you knew: 🌊 We had reached the Pacific. 💳 A Useful Travel Lesson Our arrival also produced an unexpected logistical challenge. The property did not accept credit cards. Fortunately, we were able to complete the payment through Xoom by PayPal, allowing us to transfer funds internationally and settle the reservation without any problems. 🚙 Travel Tip: In smaller destinations, especially along Mexico's coast, always have multiple payment options available. 🏨 Accommodation Cabañas Con Adrián 📍 Mazunte, Oaxaca 🛏️ 3-night stay (July 27-30, 2025) 💲 Cost per Night: $582.63 MXN ✅ Hilltop location ✅ Ocean atmosphere ✅ Outdoor living spaces ✅ Excellent base for exploring Oaxaca's coast 🌎 Day 93 marked a major transition in our journey. We left mountains, festivals, and colonial cities behind and entered a completely different side of Mexico. The next chapter would be about beaches, sunsets, ocean views, and life on the Pacific Coast. 👍 If you enjoy road trips, mountain drives, coastal destinations, and exploring Mexico beyond the typical tourist route, don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and Follow along. 🌅 Next Episode: Exploring Mazunte, Punta Cometa, and one of the most beautiful sunsets in Oaxaca. 🚐 TRAVELNAUTAS RESOURCES 🗺️ Road-trip guides, border-crossing logistics, vehicle preparation tips, travel tools, and practical resources. 🌐 Website: https://travelnautas.co 📍 Follow our complete Canada-to-Mexico journey on Polarsteps: https://www.polarsteps.com/Migueloria... #️⃣ Hashtags #Mazunte #Oaxaca #PuertoEscondido #PuntaCometa #MexicoRoadTrip #Travelnautas #RoadTripMexico #OaxacaCoast ##PacificCoas #DrivingInMexico #MexicoByCar
