In the middle of that floor stands a stack of three large rough stones, lit from above by one narrow spotlight, and the stones and the small pool of floor around them are the brightest thing in the room. People in dark coats go up and down the steps, and in the long exposure they are only soft shapes passing through. On the upper level to the right a long travertine counter runs the length of the wall with a thin line of light along it and one person working behind it. A few small tables and chairs sit out on the upper floor, an olive tree stands at the left edge, and the lower right corner falls away into shadow. Over the hour the room goes slowly darker and a little warmer, and the light on the stones stays where it is. Everyone else is on their way somewhere. The stones have not moved all evening. A lounge trio keeps an even pulse behind you, close but never in front. Nothing sharp, nothing that needs an answer. One thing at a time, for as long as it takes.
