In 1965 Anne Hendricks married Sid Bass, heir to a Fort Worth oil fortune, after her father warned her that "great wealth could breed a lot of unhappiness." She built a Paul Rudolph house with 12 levels and 14 ceiling heights, raised about $10 million for the School of American Ballet, and bought a record-priced Fifth Avenue apartment for $5.25 million. In 1986 the society columns linked her husband with Mercedes Kellogg, the wife of a former U.S. ambassador. A magazine crowned Anne the Empress of Fort Worth in February 1987, the same month another called the romance a merger. The 1988 settlement was reported at $200 million, the largest in Texas history at the time, and 34 years later twelve works from her collection sold for $363 million.
