Before You Throw Away an Old Penny, Check These 4 Wheat Pennies!
Could one of these old Wheat Pennies be hiding a valuable variety?
In this video, we examine four Lincoln Wheat Pennies that every collector should know: the 1935-S, 1953-D, 1947-D, and 1955-D.
But here's the important part: simply having an old date or a mint mark does NOT automatically make a penny rare.
We look at the tiny details that can separate an ordinary circulated Wheat Penny from a potentially valuable variety, including repunched mintmarks, doubled dies, condition, mint marks, and the difference between genuine mint-made varieties and post-mint damage.
The 1953-D has documented repunched mintmark varieties, including FS-501. The 1955-D also has documented varieties including the FS-101 doubled die, FS-502 D over Horizontal D, and FS-503 repunched mintmark. PCGS records an FS-503 example selling for $1,900 in January 2023.
The 1947-D is another fascinating example of how condition can transform value. A PCGS MS67+ Red example reached $18,000 at Heritage Auctions in December 2022, while the ordinary circulated version is a completely different story.
And don't confuse the 1955-D with the famous 1955 Philadelphia Doubled Die. The legendary 1955 Doubled Die has no mintmark and has reached $114,000 at auction, but that record belongs to the Philadelphia issue—not a normal 1955-D.
Before you clean, sell, or spend an old Wheat Penny, inspect the date, mint mark, surface, and possible variety carefully.
Watch until the end and learn what to look for on your own coins.
Which of these four Wheat Pennies would you want to find in your change?
