Georgetown — Below the Waterline

Georgetown, capital of Guyana, sits six feet below sea level. The Atlantic Ocean is held back by a seawall built through enslaved labour — for a city those people were never intended to inhabit as citizens. What exists today is a city of considerable architectural beauty and social complexity that its original designers did not plan for and could not have anticipated.
