A vanished Roman water system turns bright blue in minutes. And that’s just the start.
Time Team return to Turkdean, Gloucestershire, where last year’s vast villa suddenly grew up the hillside. This time, an aisled hall emerges with a towered entrance, a painted-plaster cellar, and mosaic tesserae where a “barn” should be. Fourth-century coins tie it to the grand villa above, while earlier second–third century pottery hints at a deeper story beneath. In the stream, snapped brooches raise a bold question about ritual at the springs. Then comes the clincher: a dye test that races through hidden culverts to reveal how water shaped the entire estate. What the colour proves, and how it reshapes the timeline, might surprise you.
Step inside the entrance towers, follow the conduit to its Roman spring head, and see why this site may have moved from aisled hall to high-status residence. Watch to the end for a very Time Team thank-you to Dea Fortuna.
