Neuroscientist: Why Prayer May Be Evidence God Exists

A story about someone being healed by prayer is one thing. Medical records documenting an extraordinary recovery are another. Dr. Joshua Brown, a neuroscientist at Indiana University, has spent years investigating what happens when those two things meet. His team has examined medical records, consulted specialists, and published cases of recoveries they could not explain. But confirming that someone recovered is not the same as knowing what caused it. Belief, expectation, and human connection all deserve serious consideration before we reach for a supernatural explanation. Brown’s research asks how far those explanations can take us—and what remains unresolved. To make sense of it, we follow five clues: • Three extraordinary recoveries after prayer—and the medical evidence behind them • What the placebo effect reveals about the power of belief, and whether it can explain these cases • What happened when researchers compared five minutes of prayer with relaxing music • The overlooked connection between all three healings: none happened alone • And the loss that forced Brown to confront what happens when healing never comes This conversation takes both the remarkable recoveries and the unanswered prayers seriously. It examines what can be documented, what remains a matter of interpretation, and why the distinction matters to anyone searching for hope. Together, those clues lead to a much bigger question: Could some of these recoveries be evidence that God actually heals people in response to prayer?
