Comedian and Newcastle local Elliot Stewart joins Comedian Kathryn Thomas at the historic Tower Cinemas for a screening of the new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. After the movie, they discuss Grogu’s undeniable cuteness, the magic of practical effects, Star Wars’ familiar formula and the importance of experiencing big films on the big screen. Elliot also shares the story behind Newcastle Comedy Club, from travelling hours to perform five-minute open-mic sets to helping build a dedicated home for comedy in Newcastle. Along the way, they revisit childhood cinema memories, argue for the greatest films ever made and test Elliot’s surprisingly limited knowledge of Jim Carrey’s filmography. There is also an unexpected phone call to a passing comedian. Only in Cinemas is a series celebrating Australian artists, performers, movie lovers and the independent cinemas that bring communities together. This episode was filmed at Tower Cinemas in Newcastle, an Art Deco cinema originally opened in 1930 and recently restored after several years of closure.
