Who invented prison? The answer is stranger than you'd expect: for most of human history, locking someone up wasn't the punishment at all. It was where you waited for one. How Did Humans Invent Prisons?
In this history of prisons, we start with a tiny band around a fire, where gossip and banishment did the work of a court. Then we follow the idea through Mesopotamian clay tablets, the stone pit beneath Rome's Capitoline Hill, and the final weeks of Socrates, before a London workhouse, a young Italian author, an English sheriff, and Quaker reformers turned the waiting room into the sentence.
Along the way you'll see why the cheaper Auburn system spread while Eastern State's total isolation faded, how Jeremy Bentham's circular prison and Michel Foucault's interpretation of it still divide historians, and what pretrial detention looks like today.
