La storia della corsa: La 200 Miglia di Imola (conosciuta come "La corsa dei sogni") venne disputata dal 1972 al 1985 (non nel 1979). Fu ideata da "Checco" Costa (il padre del Dottor Costa) in risposta alla popolare corsa statunitense della 200 Miglia di Daytona. Decise di creare la "Daytona europea" con i migliori piloti da tutto il mondo. Era diversa da tutte le altre corse, perchè vincendola ti garantiva successo, popolarità e fama ( e un premio, nella prima edizione, di 35 milioni di Lire). La corsa continuò ad essere un mondo a parte nel panorama motociclistico anche quando fu inserita nel calendario del motomondiale. Fu proprio il suo successo a indurre la FIM (Federazione Internazionale Motociclistica) a istituire nel 1977 il Campionato del mondo classe 750.
