Can you sing an entire opera in a language you don't speak? How can a human voice be heard over a full orchestra without a microphone? And what happens when you've spent months preparing for a performance, but your voice suddenly isn't cooperating? Welcome to the extraordinary world of opera singing! In this episode of *What's in the Title*, I meet Tamina Biber, a young Swiss soprano whose passion for opera, wonderful humour and perspective on life made this conversation particularly special. Opera can seem like a distant, mysterious world. The magnificent voices, the elaborate costumes, the dramatic stories, the beautiful theatres. But what is life actually like for the people who perform on those stages? Tamina takes us behind the scenes and explains the profession from the very beginning. We discover what it means to be a soprano, how singers develop their voices, and why the roles you're allowed to sing depend on much more than simply reaching the right notes. Then comes something I found absolutely fascinating: the human body as a musical instrument. Tamina explains the training behind singing without a microphone, the importance of breathing and physical fitness, and why taking care of your voice becomes an entire way of life. But that's only the beginning of the work. How do opera singers get hired? Why might you travel for hours just to sing for ten minutes? How do you learn a role in a foreign language? And what really happens between being offered a part and finally stepping onto the stage? Tamina walks us through auditions, contracts, voice coaches, months of preparation, rehearsals, and the moment singers finally perform with the orchestra. We also explore some of the realities that audiences rarely see: the cost of building a singing career, the uncertainty of finding your next role, the pressure to perform when you're unwell, and the difficult decision to turn down an opportunity you're not ready for. And then there's rejection. Tamina shares how she approaches the moments when someone else gets the role, why sometimes the decision has very little to do with talent, and how she manages to remain both ambitious and wonderfully optimistic. One of my favourite discoveries comes when Tamina tells me about "Ahimè!", an opera association she founded with two friends because they weren't getting enough opportunities to perform during their studies. So they decided to create those opportunities themselves! We also talk about the funny assumptions people make about opera singers, the strange relationship between passion and getting paid, and what kind of personality actually enjoys this demanding profession. At just 26, Tamina has an extraordinary combination of ambition, discipline, warmth and perspective. I came away from our conversation understanding far more about opera, and also thinking about confidence, perseverance and how we define success. Whether you've never attended an opera, love classical music, are curious about unusual careers, or simply enjoy discovering the people behind fascinating professions, this conversation is for you. And perhaps by the end, you'll be looking up what's playing at your nearest opera house. I certainly hope so! ----- *About What's in the Title?* Your backstage pass to the world—and future—of work.
