Deep in the dry Kalahari lives one of Africa’s most remarkable cooperative birds — the Sociable Weaver (*Philetairus socius*).
This small bird survives in an extreme landscape by living together in enormous communal nests that can contain dozens of chambers. But its most fascinating story begins with food. Insects and other arthropods are an important part of its diet, especially during the warmer months, while termites can become a major food source. The birds forage mainly on the ground, searching through dry grass and soil for termites, caterpillars, beetles, ants and other small prey. Their chicks are fed animal-based food, giving the young the protein they need to grow.
During breeding, a female can lay *2–6 eggs**, usually around 3–4. Incubation takes about **15 days**, and the chicks remain in the nest for roughly **21–24 days* before fledging. Parents are often assisted by older helpers from previous broods, creating an extraordinary cooperative family system.
From tiny eggs to skilled insect hunters, every stage is a battle for survival.
*Watch until the end to discover how these remarkable birds find food, protect their colony and raise the next generation!*
