The .30-30 has taken plenty of moose.
But most of those old stories leave out one thing:
Distance.
This video ranks six lever-gun cartridges against three practical tests for Alaska moose hunting—energy at two hundred yards, access to a heavy bear-defense load, and whether you can still buy the rifle and ammunition today.
The .348 Winchester shoots beautifully but has become an orphan.
The .444 Marlin and .450 Marlin hit harder on paper, but current rifle availability works against them.
And the .30-30 simply runs out of margin too quickly.
That leaves the old .45-70 Government.
It isn’t the flattest shooter, and a short Guide Gun shouldn’t be treated like a two-hundred-yard rifle.
But it’s the only cartridge on the list that passes all three tests.
Sometimes the oldest answer survives because it still does the whole job.
