The year you turn 65, Ohio takes $29,000 off the value it taxes your house on. Social Security does not count toward the income test. One form, filed once, with your county auditor.
This video ranks twelve Ohio towns by the yearly property-tax bill a 65-year-old pays to keep the typical house, computed the county's own way: census median value × 35 % × the county's effective residential rate, minus the homestead reduction (Ohio Revised Code 323.152, tax year 2025). The bill under 65, the bill at 65, the rate, the minutes to a 24-hour emergency room and the county's reappraisal year are on screen for every town. Listings run higher than the census median; both are on screen.
Then the part every list skips: the county reappraisal. The last three statewide rounds added close to a third to home values, eleven of these twelve towns sit on the 20-mill school floor, and House Bill 186 (effective March 20, 2026) capped that floor growth to inflation with a new line on the bill, the Inflation Cap Credit. Net: the reappraisal takes back roughly a third of the birthday.

CORRECTIONS I OWE YOU UP FRONT
The $29,000 is the tax year 2025 amount (bills paid in 2026). The 2026 amount is indexed and had not been published on the Department's page when this was made. Fostoria's and Galion's in-town emergency rooms could not be confirmed 24-hour from their own pages; the backup hospitals in Tiffin and Bucyrus are. East Liverpool's pottery share is "more than half" per the Ohio History Connection, not the two-thirds you will read elsewhere.
