(22 Jun 1970) RR7025B MEXICO: ECHEVERRIA'S PRESIDENTIAL CAMP The staging of the 1970 world football champion ships in Mexico recently has tended to obscure another, more serious contest - the Presidential election campaign. Polling is on July 5th; there are two candidates, but the result is already certain. Senor Luis Echeverria Alvariz (LEA), the 48-year old candidate of the PRI ruling party, will be confirmed as President of Mexico for the next six years. LEA has been campaigning at full throttle for the last six months, touring the country in a fleet of ten silver coaches. He's now visited every one of Mexico's 32 states and appeared personally before 15 million of his fellow-countrymen. He's going to need all the energy he can muster if he is to make any impression on some of Mexico's fundamental problems, especially the gap between rich and poor. In this report, we look at the contrasting aspects of life in Mexico City, and follow Senor Echeverria on his campaign trail.
