Boys and girls..
Once upon a time when they are both a little dumb :)
-----------------------
BORROWED MOMENT
Tuesday afternoon, PE again
Different classes all day, but this one we share
I walk through the gym doors trying not to stare
But somehow I always know when you’re there
I noticed your smile, the way you were kind
The way you stopped to help someone behind
You stayed until they finally got it right
And something about you stayed on my mind
I’ve had boys try to talk to me before
But it never felt anything like this
Maybe I should just come talk to you
But what if I don’t know what to say?
So next time I’ll say hi
Next time I won’t just smile
Next time when I see you in the hallway
I’ll stay with you a little while
Maybe we could just be friends
Maybe that could be enough
I just want to know you better
Why does that feel so tough?
So I tell myself, “Next time”
Every time your eyes find mine
And save another borrowed moment
Until I learn to cross that line
I get excited when we share a game
Hope we get paired up, then hide it again
Sometimes we dance, sometimes you stand close
And somehow those little things mean the most
At home I tell my mama about you
She smiles and says, “Then be his friend”
“You don’t have to make it something bigger
Just get to know him if you can”
She says, “You’re used to talking to girls
Boys don’t have to feel so strange
You can start with something simple
Just say hi and let things change”
So next time I’ll say hi
Next time I won’t just smile
Next time when I see you in the hallway
I’ll stay with you a little while
What if I sound awkward?
What if I freeze again?
What if every time I see you
I’m too nervous to begin?
Still I tell myself, “Next time”
Every time your eyes find mine
And save another borrowed moment
Until I learn to cross that line
Then one day you walked over first
And suddenly I forgot to be afraid
You asked me something, I answered back
And somehow the conversation stayed
For once it wasn’t just a smile
For once we really had some time
I wanted to keep talking
I wanted to ask you something too
Okay
Just say something
Ask him about class
Ask him about anything
Don’t overthink it
Don’t let the moment go
You’re still standing there
Still smiling at me
So I take one breath
And finally think—
Just do it
Then the teacher calls
Everybody turns back
Class starts moving
And the moment disappears
I almost asked you
I almost knew
Maybe you wanted
To keep talking too
Then PE ended
And the semester changed
New classes, new schedules
Everything rearranged
I searched for your name
Hoping somehow
We’d have another class again
But maybe not this time
Maybe next term instead
My mama says there’s a whole world waiting
And I don’t have to rush ahead
Still I’ll remember
Every smile across that room
Every little borrowed moment
That disappeared too soon
Different class
Different hall
Maybe next term
And if I see you—
This time
I’ll say hi
