Every preview of LSU–Ole Miss this week has been about Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford. That's the wrong question. The question is whether anybody actually knows how good LSU's defense is. The Tigers have allowed 12.0 points a game — but that number was built on a 51-10 win over a Clemson team that scored one touchdown against Georgia Southern the following week, and a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. LSU's twelve points a game is the most-quoted number of the week and the least examined. The Tigers beat Clemson 51-10 and Louisiana Tech 45-14. Clemson then scored a single touchdown against Georgia Southern in a 22-7 win. Bill Flowers extends the point in the direction nobody wants to go: we don't know how good Ole Miss's defense is either. But Ole Miss has already been punched in the mouth this season, and that is information LSU does not yet have about itself. 2. The blueprint is inverted from what you'd expect. Flowers does not say establish the run and then take your shots. He says the deep ball is what buys the run: "If we do not create a deep ball early and often, it's going to be hard for us to establish the run the way that we want." Hit one over the top to Deuce Alexander early, the safety has to respect it, the box lightens, and Kewan Lacy is running at a lighter front. 3. Flowers thinks this game is not close in either direction — Ole Miss wins by more than you'd expect, or it gets away from them.
