What was it actually like to live inside a World War I trench?
Soldiers didn’t just fight from the trenches — they ate there, slept there, waited there, and sometimes spent days surrounded by mud, rats, artillery fire and almost constant uncertainty.
In this video, we look at what daily life in a WW1 trench was really like: where soldiers slept, how they ate, how they dealt with rain and mud, what happened during bombardments, why trench foot became such a serious problem, and what it felt like waiting for the order to go over the top.
The trenches could be quiet for hours.
Then everything could change in seconds.
