In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the complete point cloud to Revit workflow, from importing a .RCS point cloud file and setting up building levels to tracing walls, stairs, doors, windows, floors, balconies, and the roof. You’ll also learn how to use Revit’s point cloud visibility, color modes, section boxes, view range, and point cloud snapping to make modeling from laser-scanned building data much easier.
This workflow is useful for architects, BIM professionals, engineers, surveyors, architectural students, and anyone working with existing buildings or as-built documentation.
In this video, you’ll learn:
00:00 Introduction & Point Cloud Overview
00:34 Importing Point Cloud File into Revit
00:51 Navigating the 3D Scan & Section Box
01:20 Setting Up Levels & Aligning Point Cloud Data
02:22 Adjusting View Range for Wall & Window Visibility
02:44 Point Cloud Display Modes (Single Color, Elevation, Intensity, Normals)
04:08 Drawing Exterior Walls & Wall Thickness Setup
04:52 Snapping Walls to Point Cloud Data
06:02 Tracing Interior Walls & Elevator Shaft
06:40 Modeling Stairs & Matching Sectional Deviations
07:38 Adding Doors & Customizing Window Families
08:50 Creating Floors, Balcony Railings & Floor Openings
09:47 Duplicating Typical Floors Across Levels
10:16 Modeling the Roof & Attaching Walls
11:35 Final 3D BIM Model Showcase
A point cloud captures the existing geometry of a building using LiDAR scanning, making it possible to document an existing building and use the captured data as a reference for creating a BIM model in Revit.
The key principle throughout the workflow is to model the building as it currently exists, rather than automatically straightening or "improving" irregular walls and other elements.
By the end, you’ll have a Revit model based on the point cloud that can be used to create as-built documentation, floor plans, CAD exports, and 3D renders.
