Come along with me for a very special up-close tour of a Fairchild C-119 “Flying Boxcar” at the Palmer Airport in Palmer, Alaska! What makes this video even better is getting to spend some time with the plane’s proud owner, John Reffett. John isn’t just the owner and caretaker of these incredible aircraft — he actually flew the C-119 and has been involved with Flying Boxcars in Alaska for decades. The Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar was designed as a military transport aircraft and became famous for its unmistakable twin-boom design and huge rear cargo area. These airplanes were built to haul troops, equipment and cargo, and after their military careers, C-119s found a second life doing some serious work in Alaska. John has an incredible history with these airplanes. His C-119s were used in Alaska, where the Flying Boxcar’s ability to haul large loads made it well suited for moving freight into remote areas. John was also part of the flight crews that operated these aircraft in Alaska. In this video, John gives us a closer look at the C-119 and shares some of the history of this amazing airplane. Being able to walk around it, get inside it and hear about it from someone who actually flew these machines makes this much more than just an airplane tour. This is a piece of aviation history that you simply don’t get to experience every day! One of my favorite parts about traveling with King BMX is getting the opportunity to meet interesting people and discover incredible vehicles, airplanes and pieces of history along the way. Our trip to Alaska gave us another one of those opportunities, and I’m excited to share it with you. Thanks again to John Reffett for taking the time to show us his incredible Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar and share some of its story. If you enjoy vintage airplanes, military aviation, Alaska adventures, BMX and behind-the-scenes videos from our travels, please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and follow along. There’s a lot more coming!
