AI feels like software. Underneath, it is physical infrastructure consuming enormous amounts of electricity. Modern AI data centers contain high-density GPU racks, high-speed networking, memory, storage, power-conversion equipment, liquid-cooling systems, batteries, transformers, pumps and backup power. By 2027, the International Energy Agency says an advanced server rack could have peak power demand comparable to roughly 65 households. Global data-center electricity consumption reached roughly 485 terawatt-hours in 2025. The IEA projects approximately 950 terawatt-hours by 2030. In this episode of SystemDepth, we go underneath the cloud to understand where all that electricity actually goes — from GPUs and networking to cooling systems, substations and the electrical grid. AI may live in the cloud. But the cloud runs on electricity. SystemDepth — Understand what’s happening underneath.
