Struggling to remember which surface preparation standard does what? This video shares simple mnemonics and memory tricks to help you connect SSPC, ISO, and ASTM standard numbers with their meanings while studying for AMPP CIP Level 1.
Because apparently, remembering the standards wasn’t enough—we also have to remember why SP 5 is cleaner than SP 10. 😅
Here’s what we review:
• SSPC surface preparation standards: SP 1 solvent cleaning, SP 2 hand tool cleaning, SP 3 power tool cleaning, and SP 11 power tool cleaning to bare metal.
• The abrasive blast-cleaning ladder: SP 7 brush-off, SP 6 commercial, SP 10 near-white, and SP 5 white metal.
• ISO 8501–8504: visual cleanliness, surface-cleanliness tests, surface profile, and preparation methods—including memory cues for dust testing, chloride measurement, Bresle extraction, conductivity, and profile comparators.
• ASTM field checks: D4285 for oil or water in compressed air, D4417 for surface profile, and D4940 for water-soluble ionic contamination in blasting abrasives.
A few memory hooks you’ll hear:
“7 = Swipe”
“6 = CommerSixal”
“10 = Ten-near-white”
“5 = FIVE-star clean”
“Dirty three = dust”
Pause the video and test yourself: can you name the standard’s purpose before the explanation?
Use these memory aids alongside your course materials and the applicable standards.
Which standard do you always mix up? Leave it in the comments, and subscribe for more coatings-inspector study resources.
