Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York accepted the Democratic vice presidential nomination at the 1984 Democratic National Convention, becoming the first woman to be nominated by a major party for vice president. Ferraro was the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale, who was running against incumbent President Ronald Reagan. "By choosing a woman to run for our nation's second highest office, you sent a powerful signal to all Americans. There are no doors we cannot unlock. We will place no limits on achievement," Ferraro said in her speech on July 19, 1984. #news #dnc #archives CBS News 24/7 is the premier anchored streaming news service from CBS News and Stations that is available free to everyone with access to the internet and is the destination for breaking news, live events, original reporting and storytelling, and programs from CBS News and Stations’ top anchors and correspondents working locally, nationally and around the globe.
