Two Federal Pages Date Mount Shasta's Last Eruption 3,000 Years Apart
Mount Shasta City has about 3,300 residents, a 2014 study counted more than 25,000 tourists a year, and about 35 percent of them come for spiritual reasons.
The Geological Survey ranks the volcano fifth in the country on its 2018 threat list, yet one federal page dates the last eruption to about 200 years ago and another to about 3,200 years ago, and on September 20, 2014 a flood came down the south flank into Mud Creek with no volcanic or seismic trigger.
Mount Shasta is sold as a hollow mountain with a hidden city inside. In practice it is a very-high-threat volcano that two federal pages date differently, a peak whose glaciers grew for half a century, and a sacred place still being argued over. This film keeps coming back to one question: what is actually inside Mount Shasta?
We start with the textbook: the largest stratovolcano in the Cascade Range, fifth on the Geological Survey's 2018 threat ranking. Then Frederick Spencer Oliver, who began A Dweller on Two Planets in Yreka in 1883 and whose mother published it in 1905; the 1931 Lemuria book by Harvey Spencer Lewis under the pen name Wishar Spenle Cervé; Guy Ballard and the I AM Activity; and Telos, which first appears in channeled messages in 1992.
From there: three different answers to when Shasta last erupted, glaciers that grew between 1951 and 2002, the Mud Creek flood of September 20, 2014, and who was here first, the 1998 Forest Service decision to cancel a ski permit.
Where the facts stop, the film says so: nobody can say for certain when Shasta last erupted or will again, nobody has published what set off the Mud Creek flood, and nobody has published proof of the city. Status as of October 2026: the Panther Meadows order limiting groups to ten people was written to expire in August 2026, and the film could not find whether it was renewed; the Winnemem Wintu were still seeking federal recognition in the last account found.
If you like watching a famous place quietly stop making sense the closer you look, subscribe. New places, same question: what about this no longer makes sense?
