Why It Sucks to Be a Goddess Vessel (in the Aztec Empire) In the Aztec Empire, young women chosen to embody the maize goddess Xilonen were treated as living deities dressed in fine cotton and feathers, fed rich food reserved for nobility, worshipped by entire crowds, and taught sacred songs and dances. Then, weeks later, they were sacrificed in a ceremony believed necessary to secure the harvest for the coming year. This video covers the real history of the Aztec ixiptla system, the practice of selecting a person to physically embody a god or goddess until the moment of their ritual death. It covers the festival of Huey Tecuilhuitl, the Ochpaniztli festival and the goddess Toci, the maize goddess Chicomecoatl, and the year-long male vessel of Tezcatlipoca during the festival of Toxcatl. It also covers the Aztec creation myth at Teotihuacan that explains why this entire system of sacrifice was believed necessary in the first place. This is a historical documentary based on the Florentine Codex, compiled by Bernardino de Sahagún with firsthand Nahua accounts, and other documented Aztec religious records. The ritual violence itself is discussed factually rather than shown in graphic detail. 🔔 Subscribe for more forgotten and uncomfortable history. #AztecHistory #DarkHistory #AncientHistory #HistoryDocumentary #MesoamericanHistory
