In the summer of 1943, Germany launched an offensive that the Soviets had been expecting for months. They had dug anti-tank ditches, laid hundreds of thousands of mines, and even worked out roughly when the attack would come. The Germans attacked anyway.
The result is remembered as the biggest tank battle in history. But the most famous tank clash of the battle probably didn't happen the way the legend says. The fight that really decided the outcome was won with shovels, minefields, and artillery, long before most tanks fired a shot.
In this video, we break down the Battle of Kursk (Operation Citadel):
🔹 Why Hitler kept delaying the attack, waiting for new Panther and Tiger tanks
🔹 How the Soviets learned the plan and chose to defend first, then counterattack
🔹 How they turned the Kursk bulge into a deep defensive landscape of trenches, mines, and anti-tank guns
🔹 What really happened at Prokhorovka, and why historians still debate it
🔹 Why Hitler called off the offensive after the Allied landing in Sicily
🔹 How Kursk shifted the initiative on the Eastern Front for good
Thousands of tanks gave the battle its name. Thousands of shovels gave it its result.
📌 A note on the numbers: historians disagree on exact figures for forces, losses, and the events at Prokhorovka, so all numbers in this video are approximations.
