Families traveled to South Carolina for hotels, water attractions, shopping, television studios, and a carefully packaged vision of Christian entertainment. Then a payment hidden inside a construction bill helped bring the entire empire down. On December 6, 1980, televangelist Jim Bakker met 21-year-old church secretary Jessica Hahn in a Florida hotel room. Hahn later alleged that she had been lured there and drugged. Bakker maintained that the encounter was consensual. What followed was less disputed. The PTL ministry paid Hahn $279,000 through a contractor, who billed the money back as a construction expense. She signed a confidentiality agreement, and the secret remained buried for seven years. During that time, Bakker promoted lifetime partnerships at his expanding resort. For a $1,000 donation, supporters were promised annual lodging for life. He claimed that only 25,000 memberships would be sold. The ministry eventually sold more than 159,000, although its two hotels could accommodate only a fraction of those donors. The money flowing into Heritage USA supported an extraordinary expansion, including a 21-story hotel tower that was never completed. Its exposed concrete shell still stands south of Charlotte, with empty windows open to the weather and vegetation growing from the roof. Bakker’s rise had started far more modestly. He and Tammy Faye traveled between churches performing puppet shows and gospel music before discovering that television could turn religious conversation into mass entertainment.
