Find a quiet place, put on headphones and turn on a voice recorder. 2. Press play and answer every question out loud when the screen says YOUR TURN. Do not pause the video. 3. In Part 2, use the minute to make notes on the cue card, then speak for one to two minutes. 4. When the test ends, listen to your recording and use the self-check sheet to mark yourself. 5. Watch the sample answers and compare them with yours: ideas, structure, vocabulary and fluency. 6. Your answers will be different, and that is fine. Use the samples to learn how to extend and organize your ideas. ABOUT THE IELTS SPEAKING TEST The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner and lasts 11 to 14 minutes. In Part 1 the examiner asks questions about yourself and familiar topics such as home, work, study and hobbies, for four or five minutes. In Part 2 you receive a cue card, prepare for one minute and then talk for one to two minutes. In Part 3 the examiner asks more abstract questions linked to the Part 2 topic, for four or five minutes. You are marked on four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. The Speaking test is the same for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. TIPS FOR A HIGHER SPEAKING SCORE • Answer the question directly, then add a reason or an example. Do not stop after one short sentence. • In Part 2, cover every point on the cue card and keep going until the examiner stops you. • In Part 3, give your opinion and explain it. Compare the past with the present or one group of people with another. • Do not memorize answers. Examiners notice and they mark natural language higher. • If you forget a word, paraphrase it and keep talking. Fluency matters more than one perfect word. • Practice every day, even for five minutes, and listen to your own recordings. WHO IS THIS TEST FOR? Anyone preparing for IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training who wants to practice speaking at home with a realistic timed test. It works for self-study, for speaking partners and for classes.
