“Hypnotized” was written by Terry Noland and Norman Petty. It was originally recorded in mid-February, 1957 by Terry Noland as a rockabilly song. The Drifters heard it and recorded a “cover version” for the R&B audience in April and released it in May, 1957. Interestingly, the Terry Noland release was delayed until June, 1957, meaning the cover version came out first!
The Drifters version first charted on June 6 on WGES, a Chicago R&B station. It reached top-10 in Pittsburgh (on both R&B and Top-40 stations), but wasn’t widely popular elsewhere. Nationally, it made #79 on Billboard, but didn’t reach their abbreviated R&B list.
This was in the post-Clyde McPhatter years where the Drifters weren't being hugely successful on the charts, at least, not like before or after.
