Quantum Computing Will Reset Everything

What will quantum computing actually change and where could the next billion-dollar companies be created? This 13-minute deep dive covers the future of quantum computing, post-quantum cryptography, quantum cybersecurity, blockchain security, quantum-safe banking, quantum hardware, quantum sensing, quantum navigation, AI + quantum, and the global quantum race. The biggest quantum story may not be building a faster computer. A sufficiently powerful fault-tolerant quantum computer could force the world to rebuild parts of the digital trust infrastructure behind banking, software, cloud computing, digital identity, blockchains and critical infrastructure. We begin with the post-quantum security reset: RSA, elliptic-curve cryptography, certificates, software signatures, secure boot, machine identity and device authentication. SandboxAQ is mapping vulnerable cryptography, QuSecure is building crypto-agility and migration tools, and PQShield is pushing post-quantum protection into chips and embedded systems. We also explain Q-Day the point at which a cryptographically relevant quantum computer could threaten public-key cryptography and Harvest Now, Decrypt Later, where encrypted military, diplomatic, financial or corporate data can be collected today and potentially decrypted later. Banks, payment networks, clearing systems, exchanges, custodians, cloud providers and identity platforms all need to migrate. But a bank can become quantum-safe internally and still remain exposed through a vulnerable cloud provider, telecom network, software vendor or custodian. Quantum security may need to be measured ecosystem by ecosystem, creating opportunities in quantum-readiness scoring, supply-chain assurance and quantum-risk management. Blockchain has its own problem. Quantum computing may not destroy Bitcoin itself; it threatens the cryptographic signatures proving ownership. We cover Bitcoin quantum risk, dormant wallets, lost Bitcoin, validators, bridges, custody systems and post-quantum blockchain migration, including Project Eleven. Another major opportunity is the hardware replacement super-cycle. Power grids, aircraft, telecom equipment, cars and satellites can operate for decades. Some could become cryptographically obsolete before physically obsolete creating demand across semiconductors, secure chips, networking and device identity. We examine the 2029–2035 post-quantum migration window, why governments are moving before Q-Day, and why the first quantum market shock could happen before the first major quantum attack. Then comes geopolitics. The US, Europe, China and others may adopt different post-quantum standards, certification regimes and hardware requirements. Quantum could become the next semiconductor-style strategic race across photonics, cryogenics, quantum chips, secure communications, testing, talent, manufacturing and sovereign quantum infrastructure. PsiQuantum, Quantinuum, QuEra and Atom Computing are pursuing different quantum hardware architectures. The future may be CPU + GPU + QPU, with quantum processors acting as specialised accelerators. Many companies may rent quantum computation through AWS, Microsoft and other quantum cloud platforms. Quantum computing could impact drug discovery, batteries, catalysts, chemistry, materials science and molecular simulation. Phasecraft is working on algorithms designed to make useful quantum calculations possible with fewer resources. But quantum still lacks its “ChatGPT moment” the killer application that makes businesses understand why quantum matters. That breakthrough may come from quantum sensing first. Quantum sensors can measure time, gravity, magnetic fields, motion and radio signals with extreme precision. Q-CTRL is working on quantum navigation where GPS is jammed, spoofed or unavailable. We also explore AI + quantum computing: AI can accelerate quantum error correction, hardware control, cryptographic discovery and migration, while attackers can use AI to identify companies, devices, wallets and suppliers that remain vulnerable. The end state may not be one final encryption upgrade. It may be crypto-agility: infrastructure designed to continuously replace cryptography as standards, algorithms and threats evolve.
