Polyvagal Theory offers a powerful framework for exploring how the nervous system shapes our experience of life.
In this lecture, we explore the familiar three-state model of Sympathetic Activation, Ventral Vagal and Dorsal Vagal and use these states as a map for understanding our patterns, reactions and capacity for presence.
We explore:
• Sympathetic Activation — energy, action, focus, drive and stress
• Ventral Vagal — connection, presence, creativity, pleasure and engagement
• Dorsal Vagal — withdrawal, collapse, deep rest and reduced engagement
I also look at the current scientific discussion around Polyvagal Theory and the distinction between the theory itself and the practical value of using these states as a framework for self-observation.
The deeper exploration is experiential: How do we recognize the state we are in? How do we move through activation, connection and rest? What happens when we become increasingly sensitive to the signals of our own nervous system?
We look at everyday examples: reaching for the phone, staying busy when the body asks for rest, collapsing on the sofa after a stressful day, meditation, creativity, social connection and the subtle difference between deep presence and withdrawal.
I also explore the relationship between nervous-system patterns and trauma, including situations where professional support can become an important part of the process.
Ultimately, this is an invitation to become curious about your own experience and to discover greater flexibility, presence, connection and aliveness.
The framework is a map. Your own experience is the territory.
