Yes, I’ve heard Nene Royal perform “Black Hole Sun” before. But I kept FIRST TIME REACTION on this one because I had never seen this fan camera footage before, and this gave me an entirely different look at the performance. Over the last few weeks, I’ve spent a LOT of time watching Nene perform in the Phuket markets. Those videos usually have one relatively stationary camera, and because of that, you get to really study her. How she moves through different sections of a song. How she prepares for certain vocal moments. How she interacts with the band and the crowd. How her body language changes with the emotion of the music. America’s Got Talent obviously has incredible production, and the televised version of “Black Hole Sun” looked beautiful. But it’s also edited like a major television production. Camera changes, close-ups, slow motion, audience shots, judges, everything. This fan cam was different. For the first time, I could watch Nene perform this song more like I’ve been watching all of those market performances, and suddenly I started noticing little things I never would have picked up on when I first saw this performance several weeks ago. And emotionally, this hit differently too. We’ve seen Nene playful. We’ve seen her intense. Focused. Having fun with the crowd. Completely locked in with her band. But this felt different. Being able to just watch her continuously as the emotion poured out of her made me appreciate this performance all over again. I’m ridiculously excited to see where this goes for her.
