The land isn't for sale. Everything that makes it pay is another matter. Two Roman families, one patrician and fading, one plebeian and rising, followed from the First Punic War to the legions of Caesar, where their bloodlines converge as the ancestors of Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo. In this chapter: Aulus walks the family's olive slope with his son, then goes to tell two freedmen what is about to happen to the press and the mill their livelihoods depend on. The only man in the valley with the money to take them on is the neighbor his family has argued with across a low stone wall for three generations, and the visit shows Aulus how lopsided that argument has always been. A note on sources: Roman patronage, the position of freedmen in a former owner's household, and the cereal, vine, and olive farming most Romans lived by are historically grounded. Statius, Hermes, Decimus Junius Calvus, and the Junius estate are invented, and the estate's scale is dramatized. Historians debate how common large estates worked by enslaved labor were this early in the Republic. This is consistent with the series' historical liberty policy. #RomanHistory #HistoricalFiction #AncientRome
