Fall asleep tonight inside a great Norfolk country house on the one weekend of the year it was ever completely full. It is the autumn of 1887, Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee year, and a shooting party has doubled the household to nearly 30 people in service under a single roof. The butler earns perhaps £50 to £60 a year while a Norfolk farm labourer keeps a whole family on 12 to 15 shillings a week, and one candlelit dinner can cost more than the 13-year-old scullery maid earns in a year. In these very weeks Charles Booth is walking London and finding around a third of the city living on some £1 a week or less. And pinned to every bedroom door along the corridor is a small handwritten card with a name on it, because in a house suddenly full of strangers, no one, not even the maid carrying hot water in the dark, knows whose door is whose.
