Can this young fir tree become a bonsai? In this video, I begin the long process of turning this fir into a bonsai and developing its future design. A fir tree might not be the first tree that comes to mind when you think about bonsai—but this young tree has the potential to become something very different over time. In this project, I'm beginning the process of developing this fir tree into a bonsai. Rather than trying to create a finished bonsai in one afternoon, I'm focusing on the foundation: studying the trunk, finding the best front, deciding which branches could become part of the future design, and making the first structural decisions. I'll also look at the roots and discuss future root development, repotting, pruning, wiring and the long-term training this tree will need. The finished bonsai is still years away. For now, the goal is simply to give this young fir the best possible start. 🌲 In this fir bonsai project, I'll: Examine the young fir tree Find the potential front Study the trunk and future trunk line Decide which branches to keep and remove Begin structural pruning Discuss trunk development Examine the root system Plan future root development Discuss long-term fir bonsai development Create a vision for the finished bonsai Bonsai is a long-term process. The tree will change with every growing season, and I'll continue documenting its development to see how close we can get to the original vision. If you enjoy fir bonsai, bonsai development, gardening, plant projects and slow outdoor transformations, consider subscribing to Plant Grow Repeat and following along with this project.
