It traces the Danish conquests of Sweyn Forkbeard and Cnut, Harold's fateful march from Stamford Bridge to Hastings, and the castle-building Norman elite that spoke French for nearly two centuries. From Crécy, Agincourt and the loss of Calais to the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Anglo-Dutch wars and William of Orange's invasion of 1688, England was shaped by the outsiders it fought.
