Lake Mead stands at 1,038 feet above sea level on October 13, 2026, the lowest it has been since Hoover Dam first filled the reservoir in the 1930s. The Bureau of Reclamation's daily gauge reading is provisional, and the lake sits about three feet below its July 2022 record low. So is this the bottom, and who decides?
The lake fell about twenty feet in the past year, after a brief recovery in early 2024 that carried it to roughly 1,075 feet. The Colorado River delivers far less water than the 1922 compact assumed, and reservoirs lose large volumes to evaporation each year. The rules that turn Lake Mead's elevation into automatic water cuts expire on December 31, 2026. In August 2026, the Department of the Interior set cuts for 2027 and 2028 after the seven basin states missed their deadlines for a deal, and Nevada has sued.
