For sixty years, jaguars in Arizona were written off as lost strays from Mexico. They were lonely males that took a wrong turn at the border and would eventually wander back south. Then fifteen years of trail cameras and DNA told a very different story. These cats return to the exact canyons and water holes their predecessors used, and they carry a maternal lineage rooted in this borderland. One of them, a male named Cinco, has now made southern Arizona his home. The only thing missing is a female, and she may be much closer than anyone believed.
