In every crash test above 25 miles per hour, the Pinto's fuel tank ruptured. Ford's own engineers found it more than 40 times. The car went on sale anyway.
This is the Ford Pinto — not the version with the famous $11 memo, but the real one. The car was designed in 25 months. Iacocca wanted it on the road by 1971 and under 2,000 pounds and under $2,000. That deadline is the story no one tells.
Federal Standard 208, the rule about fuel tanks and rear-end crashes, sat unsigned at the Department of Transportation for years. Ford's engineers did not have to test above 25 miles per hour, because in 1968 the law did not require it. So they documented the flaw, filed it, and built the car.
The memo everyone quotes was about rollover rules, not about the fuel tank. Ford was acquitted in the criminal case in Indiana. The civil cases were settled. And 2.6 million Pintos were sold.
The question left behind is not what Ford knew. It is whether the law ever asked them.
