A man stands ankle deep in gray mud with both hands on a lever, and in front of him a hillside several hundred feet high is coming apart. Clay boils away in sheets. Gravel lets go. Boulders the size of kitchen stoves roll down through the wash. He does not stop. He swings the stream a few feet to the left and takes down the next section. The machine doing that is a hydraulic monitor, and the strangest thing about it is what it did not have. No steam boiler. No motor. No moving parts anywhere in the part that produced the force. Every bit of that power came from one thing: water falling down a pipe. Miners collected it high in the mountains, ran it through ditches and wooden flumes across whole counties, dropped it hundreds of feet through riveted iron pipe, and squeezed it out of a 10-inch iron nozzle that had been deliberately shaped like a Civil War field gun. The big ones weighed a ton and a half and carried a wooden box full of rock at the back, because the recoil would otherwise throw the barrel into the air. This is the story of the class of machine, not one museum piece. Foundries built monitors by the catalog, gave them names built to sell — Hoskin's Dictator, the Little Giant — and shipped them all over the gold country and eventually to Alaska and beyond. The word "monitor" itself was never a technical term. It was a brand name. In this episode: why the easy gold ran out and forced somebody to invent this in the first place; the 1853 experiment that started it, and why the sources still cannot agree on the inventor's name or his equipment; the pressure box, the collapsing pipes, the burlap-lined sluices and the mercury in them; the mine that ran 8 monitors at once, drank 25 million gallons of water a day, washed 50,000 tons of gravel every working day, and cut a pit more than a mile long and 600 feet deep that you can still walk into today. And the number that explains all of it: in that gravel, gold ran roughly one part in 12 million. Then the part almost nobody expects. This technology was not replaced by something better and it did not wear out. It was stopped. The rivers below the mines filled with mining debris, farmland went under sterile grit every spring, and in 1882 a wheat farmer took the biggest hydraulic company in California to court. What happened in 1884, and what Congress did about it nine years later, changed the rules for every industry in the country — and left the pits exactly as they are.
