How did humans domesticate cannabis? Twelve thousand years ago on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, cannabis was just a smelly weed growing in the rubbish heaps of ancient camps. The first people who tamed it weren't after a high. They wanted rope, cloth, oil and food. Today selective breeding has pulled that one species apart into two completely different plants: 16-foot industrial hemp and short, resin-covered drug varieties.
What you'll discover in this video:
The plant was here first: how cannabis split from hops about 28 million years ago, and why it thrived in the waste heaps around human camps.
One origin: the 2021 study that sequenced 110 cannabis genomes and traced every modern variety back to East Asia, 12,000 years ago.
Why this plant: the only crop tamed for fibre, food, medicine and ritual at the same time.
The genetic switch: two competing genes on one chromosome, and how ancient farmers pushed them in opposite directions without knowing it.
The archaeology: a 2,700-year-old shaman's grave in western China, Scythian smoke tents described by Herodotus, and a temple altar in ancient Judah.
Rope that built the world: hemp rigging on every ship of the age of exploration, and the 1619 law that forced colonists to grow it.
The prohibition paradox: how banning cannabis made underground breeders push its strength higher in 50 years than farmers did in thousands.
