The Voynich Manuscript is a 600-year-old book that no one has ever read — and a study published this October suggests we may have been turning its pages in the wrong order all along. We follow the book through every pair of hands that held it and check each legend against the record. Around 240 vellum pages. Tens of thousands of words in an unknown script. Plants no botanist can match, zodiac wheels, strange bathing pools, and recipes marked with stars. In this case file, the Archivist treats Beinecke MS 408 like a witness: the 2009 radiocarbon test that dated the calfskin to 1404–1438, Georg Baresch's 1639 letter to Athanasius Kircher, Johannes Marcus Marci's famous cover letter with its claim of 600 ducats and Roger Bacon, the faint "Jacobus de Tepenec" signature on the first page, the Villa Mondragone, Wilfrid Voynich's 1912 purchase, William Newbold's "hidden shorthand" that turned out to be cracked ink, William Friedman's codebreakers, and the dealer who could not sell it and gave it to Yale. Then we open the newest files: the statistics that make the text look like language and not like language at the same time, Prescott Currier's two "languages," Lisa Fagin Davis's five scribes, Michael Greshko's Naibbe cipher (Cryptologia, 2025), and the October 2026 study by Davis and Colin Layfield (Digital Medievalist) arguing that the book began as loose folded sheets that were later bound out of order — plus the researchers who disagree. We separate what is documented from what is legend, rank five theories by the weight of the evidence (modern forgery, plain language, hoax, constructed language, verbose cipher), and give our own assessment. Theories are presented as theories. The manuscript remains undeciphered as of October 28, 2026. Which side are you on: hidden message, or beautiful nonsense? Tell us in the comments.
