What actually made someone a witch during the witch trials, and how did so many completely different people get accused? From folk magic and nature-based practices to ceremonial traditions, witch trials, and modern witchcraft, we’re digging into the complicated history behind the witch. MORE FROM COFFIN UP DIRT: ‪@coffinupdirt‬ The word witch was never intended to describe one type of person. Across different cultures and historic periods, people labeled as witches could be healers, diviners, folk practitioners, magical specialists, religious outsiders, alleged heretics, and many times just ordinary people who were in some sort of feud with their neighbors. It didn't always matter if you actually practiced what would be considered magic. Many of us today might be considered witches by medieval standards. In this video, we're digging up the origins of the witch, the different types of magical practices that have existed throughout history, what those practices were used for, and how they compare to witch identities today. We will be unearthing magical practices and traditions, like nature and elemental magic, household and folk practices, inherited and traditional magic, divination, ceremonial practices, and whatever else I can find that might fall under the enormous umbrella term of "witchcraft". And of course, we will be comparing these historical practices with witches we have seen in folklore, movies, TV, and modern pop culture. But most importantly, we will be unearthing several 'witches,' or those accused and persecuted for witchcraft during the barbarism of the medieval witch trials. We will be finding answers to questions like: how did religion, politics, gender, local folklore, superstition, and fear influence who was eventually accused? By tracing the witch across thousands of years of history, folklore, and persecution, we will begin to see that the witch we recognize today was never just one singular figure. But a mosaic of so many different, incredible people, abilities, beliefs, and just, overall being. If you’re interested in folklore, mythology, history, supernatural beliefs, and the strange ways old stories continue shaping modern culture, welcome to Coffin Up Dirt. 🕯️ FULL SOURCE LIST: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1obLh...
